Class 12
VSFX 406
Over the weekend, I considered how I could expand upon my musician's journey concept to create a more developed story. After collecting references that gave me inspiration, I knew I would need the help of an fx artist, which led me to reaching out to a good friend Thalia Valencia-Murphy.
I pitched to her my previous previs animatic and the leading meaning behind the piece which makes it personal. However, I also shared reference and ideas of how to take this story a step further than just paintings on a wall. With enough time and commitment, we can dive into a story of a young musician.
The story begins with the musician being part of the audience while listening to the beginning of a solo violinist. They are so captured by this art form, unlike the rest of the crowd, and their hands reach their heart.
Suddenly, (as the background music I selected crescendos) a burst of power yields from their hands. From this power, they create a violin. (The significance of this scene is to show how an instrument can't make music without our hands, we are the source of music from inside ourselves.)
Then, we take a journey throughout the young musicians life. We see their struggle and yearning to be heard and share their love, but it is missed by every person and unappreciated. Through these transitions, we see changes in environment and time.

When the musician finally reaches success and is a soloist at a carnegie hall (where my parents met as stand partners!), their music erupts with a visual flow of power that floods the room. Unlike before, the visual music flow is absorbed by the audience, and they appreciate the musician and what they hear. The music brings life and joy, even showing shapes animals in the visual sound. As the piece quiets after the climax and sounds soft, I will composite real life images in a montage of my parents and their lives as musicians, eventually leading to myself holding a violin...
The end will show another member of the audience hands glow, coming full circle to the musician on stage again. Another young person is affected by the music he hears on stage and wants to follow the same path.

The music choice: "Of Glorious Plumage"
I played this in my high school orchestra, it was my favorite piece to play to this day.

Moodboard

Inspiration from Arcane- especially if I were do tell the entire story as a theatre maquette. To avoid environment building, I could make flat sets like the one used on stage!
